Wood Borers

Wood Borers are insects which damage timber by tunnelling during the grub stage for food, or leaving a flight hole on the surface of the wood after becoming an adult (beetle). These holes or "pin holes" are quite visible and are usually the first signs of an active infestation of wood borer.

Borers most commonly found in Victorian Homes and furniture timber are :

"Powder Post" Borers

  • Produce a very fine powder/dust similar to talc or flour (wood coloured)
  • Attack the sapwood of certain hardwood timbers
  • Infested timber over five years old is unlikely to contain active Lyctid Borer as they will have exhausted the food supply.
  • If decorative timber becomes unsightly due to borer flight holes, then treatment or replacement may be necessary

Furniture Borers

  • Prefers old, well seasoned timber such as Baltic Pine
  • Attacks some hardwoods such as Blackwood
  • Prefer cool, humid conditions.  Commonly attacks timber in sub-floors
